Abstract:

Developing high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high-energy-density and fast-charging capability represents a persistent trend for meeting the needs of electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainable energy storage applications, but it also brings up more safety issues. In this presentation, we will share our recent research progress in methodologies developed in enhancing the performance of Ni-rich NCM high-energy LIBs while simultaneously mitigating potential fire hazards. The methodologies cover electrode-microstructure and active-material surface modulations and the adoption of solid electrolytes. Examples of using synchrotron X-ray analytical tools in understanding the mechanisms behind the improvements will be given.
