Abstract:
In preparation for the major upgrade of SPring-8 and its scheduled long shutdown beginning in 2027, the Taiwan Beamline BL12B2 has undertaken extensive preparations over the past three years for the transition to SPring-8-II. As part of this effort, major beamline components and detectors have been comprehensively upgraded, with a particular focus on extending the beamline’s capabilities into the high-energy X-ray region.
In the first part of this workshop, Dr. Y-C. Shao will present an overview of these beamline enhancements and the new opportunities we provide for a wide range of advanced X-ray experiments.
One of the key scientific opportunities enabled by these upgrades is X-ray total scattering and Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis, which has attracted growing interest within the X-ray diffraction community in recent years. Since PDF measurements require data collection over a wide and high-Q range, the higher-energy X-rays now available at BL12B2 provide an ideal platform for such studies.[1] The upgraded beamline therefore offers new possibilities for investigating the local atomic structure of crystalline, nanostructured, and disordered materials.
In the second half of the workshop, Dr. S. Hiroi and Dr. J-C. Tseng, both experts in total scattering and PDF analysis, will present their experiences and recent results from PDF experiments, highlighting the capabilities and potential applications of these techniques.
The workshop will conclude with an open discussion and Q&A session on PDF-related experiments and future research opportunities at BL12B2. We warmly encourage users interested in PDF studies to participate and contribute to the discussion. We also welcome users who are considering experiments before the planned 2027 shutdown and look forward to discussing potential experimental ideas and beamtime proposals during the session.
